The Story Behind the Photo: Bark Canyon
🌲“Bark Canyon” is a photo I took this year while on a guided hike at a nature preserve in Durham County. At this time, I felt I needed to get outside because I was dealing with some heavy emotions and was seeking nature’s help in easing the pain. During the hike, we learned all about the character of the trees and foliage in the area which was empowering. As we were walking through a part of the woods that contained some very ancient oak trees, this particular one stole my attention. I touched the bark and it was surprisingly smooth, bumpy, and just felt so good to me. I was mesmerized by the variety of cracks, holes, and layers of the bark and by the shear largeness and wisdom of that tree. I took this image to share and honor the layered, dynamic beauty of that majestic oak tree.
🧘🏾♀️My practice as a nature photographer is to take photos of sights that stimulate my senses and calm me during my stress-relieving nature walks and hikes. It is a process that helped me survive severe burnout as a doctor and I continue to do it regularly to help me remain emotionally and spiritually balanced.
